Overview

How can I set up an immersive experience that confronts the audience with escapism?

For my bachelor's project I chose to do something about escapism. It's desire to escape to another world is something that has preoccupied humans since the Romantic movement. Even today, this has become increasingly accessible to us. Media such as video games and movies provide us with the opportunity to lose ourselves even more in those worlds. I want to take this a step further by physically leaving this world and immersing oneself in an entirely new world through VR. How can I come as close as possible to that escapism? In this research, I explored how I could make that immersion concrete through VR. My intention was to make the viewer realise that they want to escape into that other world, to then create a confrontation with themselves while still enjoying the pleasure of escapism, even though we know it's all an illusion.
