Overview

Stadstriënnale Hasselt Genk needed an artwork. Carte blanche.

The Merc is a projection mapping installation made in collaboration with Astrid Neefs, Robbe Vanden Brande and Min Wong. It was created for Stadstriennale SCREEN IT. This edition was all about our screen culture. Using that as a beginning point we thought about how we could create something that feels like one work of art even though we’re four different people. So we started to question who we are an artist. Who are we, how do we see ourselves, how do we want to be seen and how does the world look at us? We’re constantly living in doubt. The Merc questions the mind and explores this in a trip through the virtual and the real world. It’s here where that doubt shines through. The Merc experiments with the physical form of the actual car. Constructions and deconstructions are formed which lead to the unexpected. With outsiders that question your own identity you’ll realise that you can own those questions and make a statement out of them. It's okay to move forward without knowing the answer. The Merc was picked up by the band Portland and was used in their music video You Misread Me. For the opening event I designed a poster as well. The Merc came with its own original soundtrack that I composed to match the visuals and the atmosphere of the space. Album art was created for this soundtrack and was available to stream for a limited time.
